Overrated Tourist Attractions That You Can Cross Off Your Bucket List

There are several famed attractions around the world that are labeled as a MUST SEE. Unfortunately, many of these attractions are underwhelming, to say the least. That being said we are going to wipe away the hype and tell you why these famous monuments need to be crossed off your bucket list.

1) The Blarney Stone

The Blarney Stone is an iconic attraction set in the Blarney Castle, it is said that those who kiss the stone are blessed with the gift of gab.

The Blarney Stone is also considered one of the most unhygienic attractions in the world. With an estimated 400,000 annual visitors all kissing the stone, it might be worth it to save your time and your 12 Euros and enjoy them somewhere else.

Also, there is a rumor that suggests the locals of County Cork pee on the stone to mess with tourists. Whether that is true or not it is probably just best to stay away.

2) The Mona Lisa

Leonardo Da Vinci's iconic work of art is one of if not the most famous painting in the world and is housed in the Louvre.

Let’s be frank, you know what the Mona Lisa looks like. In fact, I would guess that you’ve seen a copy over a thousand times. The real Mona Lisa is much tinier than what you’d imagine and what’s worse you can’t really see it through the dense crowd that is constantly surrounding it.

So, avoid having to elbow your way through a throng of people in order to get close and go check out literally any other exhibit in the Louvre, which is conveniently one of the most famous museums in the world.

3) Loch Ness

Spoiler Alert*******

The Loch Ness monster does not exist. Loch Ness is an out of the way corner of Scotland with nothing but an old photo to suggest that there is some kind of prehistoric monster to help draw a crowd.

So save yourself the three and a half hour drive from Edinburgh and explore one of the many attractions Scotland has to offer, which includes tours of the highlands and maybe even finding out where and how your favorite Scotch is made.

4) The Leaning Tower of Pisa

This 14th-century tower is famous of it unintended tilt caused by an inadequate foundation, with half the building sitting on ground that is too soft to support the weight.

While this tower might be a great attraction for kids who don’t understand how lame this monument actually is, it is hard to look the large crowds of people who take pictures trying to show themselves holding up the tower.

On a side note, the Tower of Pisa has been straightened out. A 20 million Euro project was completed in the early 2010’s in order to save the tower which was on the verge of collapsing.

5) The Four Corners Monument

The Four Corners Monument is the intersection between Arizona, Colorado, Utah, and New Mexico. Because of that fact, no one state can take the blame for possibly one of the lamest monuments on the planet.

There is really nothing worse than going all the way to the middle of the desert to see the intersection with absolutely nothing else to do in the area.

As one writer for the Arizona Central Newspaper said the monument "sits in a flat, barren landscape devoid of everything as if nature threw up its hands and said, 'I got nothing.'”

6) Plymouth Rock

What’s the difference between the Plymouth Rock and every other rock on the planet, well some might point you to the number 1620 stamped onto the top side others might argue that there is no real difference?

While the rock represents the alleged landing site of the Pilgrims there isn't much more to the attraction than maybe the structure the rock is sitting in.

But if you traveled a long way and feel upset about the underwhelming attraction fear not, across the street is the Plimoth Plantation and the Mayflower II replica which gives you a comprehensive understanding of the historic period.

8) Hollywood Boulevard

The Walk of Fame is the classic example of overrated, the street is dirty and full of homeless faces and crappy street performers. Far from the romanticized boulevard full of famous movie stars and celebrities.

Although it may be fun to take pictures with your favorite stars, it’s not fun crouching down next to the dirt and gum the star has accumulated over the years. It’s fun to see all of the people who are deserving of stars until you realize they have to pay for their own stars with a $30,000 sponsorship fee.

9) The London Eye

This is 30 minutes of your life you're not getting back, plus the line is always crazy long. So you can expect to spend over an hour in order to get on a Ferris Wheel.

The Eye was intended to be temporary to celebrate the turn of the millennium, maybe they should have kept it that way and gotten rid of it after the new year. But at £21.20 for your standard ride, London's most popular tourist attraction brings in a LOT of cash money to the capital, so it's not going anywhere.

And to prove that the London eye is just another Ferris Wheel the picture above actually shows the Singapore Flyer, the second tallest Ferris Wheel in the world.

My Thoughts

Hopefully, this piece gives you a better understanding of the monuments that are so famed. I'd encourage you on your next vacation to try and discover something that appeals to you rather than going down the beaten path.
